Our Latest Single Vision Lenses

Essilor's New Eyezen range

Digital devices and usages are increasing the demands on our eyes. Closer and variable reading distances, smaller and more pixelated characters and longer exposure to screen glare are causing tired eyes and potentially exposing our eyes to the longer-term consequences of harmful blue-violet light. As many as three out of four people feel that they suffer from visual fatigue.

Eyezen is a new range of lenses designed for a connected life. It draws on extensive Essilor research, and includes two important technologies. The first: Eyezen Focus lens technology brings extra power optimized according to wearers’ profiles in the bottom part of the lens to support the eye’s effort in focusing at ultra-near distances that are typical of handheld devices. The second is Light Scan, a unique light filtering technology drawn from Essilor’s landmark Crizal Prevencia innovation, which protects eyes from the harmful blue-violet light emitted by digital screens.

Within the Eyezen range are different types of solution. Essilor Eyezen are new single vision lenses for permanent wear available in different design optimizations. These support eye focusing efforts according to the physiological needs of three age groups (young adults aged 20-34 years, pre-presbyopes aged 35-44 and emerging presbyopes 45-50 years). Varilux Eyezen are new multi-focal lenses for occasional wear specifically designed for the digital activities of presbyopes. They exist in three designs optimized according to type of screen most used - smartphone/tablet, computer or large screen (TV or projector).  In addition to existing personalization parameters, Varilux Eyezen lenses also offer an exclusive new personalization parameter - screen distance (vision distance to computer screen) to match individual intermediate vision needs.

Eyezen lenses represents the latest in Essilor technological innovation – both relaxing eyes from digital eyestrain and contribute to protecting visual health over the long-term.

Blackfield & Langley on the Wembley Trail

This Saturday, Blackfield & Langley, sponsored by Dawkins & Lodge, play the biggest home match in the history of the club when they entertain, National League South Maidenhead Utd in the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.  Victory on Saturday would leave Blackfield only 90 minutes from the draw for the first round proper, and the chance of welcoming Football League opposition to Gang Warily.

Blackfield & Langley play in the ninth tier of the English football pyramid.  Of the 300 or so teams from this level that kicked off the FA Cup back in August, only 8 remain.  The Sydenhams Wessex League, which B&L play in, is one of only two at this level to have more than one representative still in the competition.  We would like to wish Brockenhurst the best of luck in their fixture against Wealdstone.  Entry on Saturday is £8.00 adults, £5.00 concessions, Under 16 free.  With no Premier League fixtures this weekend, why not take the opportunity to see your local non-league team try to match their greatest achievement of reaching the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.

Turning Blue To Highlight Harmful Light Risk

On Monday 7 April we will be ‘turning the practice blue’ as part of a national campaign to highlight the risks of potentially harmful light.

As part of the campaign we will be offering free advice on the dangers of blue-violet light - part of the visible light we see which is present in sunlight, and emitted by computers, smartphones, tablet devices and energy-saving lightbulbs.

We will also be running a competition – available to enter in store on Monday 7 April – to fit a family of four with glasses which filter out potentially harmful light while allowing the good light through. Winners will drawn at 4.30pm on the day of the competition.

A survey to mark the campaign - called Think About Your Eyes - found that the average adult in the South East spends over 44 per cent of their waking day staring at a screen, with almost 47 per cent of people taking their first look at a smartphone, tablet device or PC at 7am or earlier.

Nigel Gemmell, principal optician at the practice said:  “Most of us are unaware that blue light is subtly emitted from most modern electrical appliances such as the modern smartphones, tablets and computer screens.

“Research tells us that these types of device all send out a form of potentially harmful blue light which can disrupt sleep, affect our mood and, most importantly, damage the cells in the eyes, increasing the likelihood of future eye disease.”

Of those polled in the South East, almost 60 per cent said the amount of screen time they’re exposed to affects them – with the most common symptom emerging as eye discomfort.

Nigel added: “Although we need some ‘good’ blue light – blue-turquoise – to help regulate our biological clocks – prolonged exposure to ‘bad’ blue light – blue-violet – could potentially put us at risk of age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness.”

“We’re encouraging the public to come and talk to us to find out how they can protect their eyes for the future.”
