Our 2013 Eyeplan Golf Day was held on 5th August, at Sandford Springs, near Newbury. Despite forecasts of heavy rain, 20 hardy souls turned out.
Jordan Ainley, who last year became the first person to win both the Hampshire Senior and Junior Championships in the same year, was the star attraction and fully lived up to his billing. Jordan went round in level par, to be a very convincing winner of the lowest gross prize.
The first nine holes were played around the Woods course, with blind tee shots on most holes, before shots onto hard greens, that were true and quick. On the tricky par 4 that was chosen for Nearest the pin in 2, Jordan was within eight feet, to take the prize. Whilst Dave Adkin was one of the few to find the fairway on the longest drive hole. Debbie Harris and Jordan had hit the ball much further, but both just rolled off the fairway, to hand Dave the prize.
There were a few in the running at the halfway stage for the best Stableford score, with Mike Robinson, Debbie Harris, Jordan, Mark Wheeler and Rob Tipp all level with their handicap.
The second nine was around the Lakes course, with water on most holes.
The next prize decided was Nearest the Pin in 3, on the longest par five. Danny McNab was pin high, only about six feet away. Mark Wheeler was the first to fall out of contention, as he failed to score on the 10th and 11th holes. Debbie Harris soon followed by failing to register on the Par 3 12th. Meanwhile on the short 16th, Jeff Gunson won the nearest the pin
With a couple of holes to go the battle was between Jordan, Rob Tipp and Mike Robinson. A couple of single pointers pushed Mike down, and with Jordan and Rob in the same group, they battled for the win. Jordan, who hit every green in regulation, was left with a long downhill putt on the 18th, which he put past the hole and failed to convert at the second attempt, enabling Rob to draw level on 35 points, and take the title.
Although it threatened to rain as the players teed off, it stayed dry throughout, with the last players getting into the clubhouse, two minutes before the heavens opened.
Lots of thanks to Eyeplan and Tag Heuer for donating prizes.
